Uzbekistan establishes annual Week of Remembrance for political repression victims

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree to expand efforts in studying the lives and activities and commemorating the memory of compatriots who became victims of political repression.

According to the document, a Republican Commission is being established to coordinate the work of commemorating the memory of victims of political repression.

Its main tasks will include organizing working groups to study the lives and activities of individuals who became victims of repression, identifying their names, collecting, researching, and popularizing the data and documents stored in archives, museums, libraries, and funds about their historical contributions.

Mirziyoyev also approved the proposal to hold an annual Week of Remembrance for the victims of political repression in October. The Republican Commission has been tasked with developing and ensuring the implementation of measures for conducting the Week of Remembrance for victims of repression.

Between 1937 and 1953, more than 100,000 Uzbeks became victims of political repression, and 13,000 people were executed. From 2021 to 2024, the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan rehabilitated over 1,200 victims of mass repression.
