Qatari Nebras Power plans to create a 1 GW wind farm in Karakalpakstan

Shavkat Mirziyoyev is on a state visit to Qatar, where he held several business meetings, the presidential press service reported.

The main topic for negotiations was joint initiatives in the energy sector of Uzbekistan. Thus, the head of state discussed the implementation of a number of investment projects with the chairman of Nebras Power, Muhammad al-Hajri.

The Qatari company has begun construction of a combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 1.6 GW in the Syrdarya region. It is completing preparations for the construction of another thermal power plant in Surkhandarya.

Nebras Power also intends to develop a partnership in “green” energy with Uzbekistan. Plans were discussed to create 600 MW energy storage systems in the Tashkent region and launch a 1 GW wind power plant in Karakalpakstan.

Then the guests met with the director of the Qatar Investment Agency and the head of the Central Bank of the emirate, Bandar bin Saoud al-Thani. The parties discussed attracting investments in the construction of future power plants operating on renewable energy sources.

In addition, prospects for investment in the modernization of Uzbekistan’s transport infrastructure were considered, in particular the construction of modern air terminals. There was interest in exchanging experience in the banking sector, including Islamic banking.

The next interlocutor was Mutaz al-Khayyat, the head of Power International Holding, an investor in the creation of a livestock cluster in the Jizzakh region. Opportunities for joint construction of expressways, business infrastructure, hotels, and medical facilities were also discussed.

Another potential area of cooperation with Power International could be the chemical industry – the production of ammonia and urea. The company is preparing to open an office in Uzbekistan.

The President then received Al Mirqab Capital CEO Saif ur Rahman Khan. Cooperation in the areas of hotel infrastructure, logistics and energy was discussed with him.

The holding, which owns 20 hotels (Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, etc.), intends to invest in the construction of a logistics center in the capital region and a hotel in Bukhara. He is also interested in expanding generating capacity.

Last week, Uzbekistan and Qatar concluded several investment agreements. We are talking about projects in “green” energy, the chemical sector, etc.
