Uzbekistan updates poverty threshold
Citizens of Uzbekistan living with monthly incomes below 648,000 UZS are now classified as poor.
The Statistics Agency has recalculated the minimum consumer expenditure value based on the "Regulation on calculation of minimum consumer expenditures and the poverty line."
Starting May 2024, the recalculated value of minimal consumer expenditures per person per month is set at 648,000 UZS.
The use of the minimal consumer expenditure indicator as a poverty threshold is widely spread in global practice, and this indicator is used for:
— Targeted identification of the population in need of state material and other social assistance;
— Enhancing the effectiveness and focus of tasks and measures specified in strategies and programs to combat poverty, as well as conducting their ongoing monitoring;
— Determining the minimum amount of pensions and benefits and as a criterion for providing other types of material assistance to poor families.
It should be noted that in January, this indicator was set at 621,000 UZS.
