Shavkat Mirziyoyev calls for enhanced regional cooperation to ensure peace and security in counterterrorism efforts
In an address to the participants of an international conference involving SCO and CIS structures, Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized that Uzbekistan is consistently implementing its National Strategy to Combat Terrorism and Extremism. The president also noted that coordinating the activities of special services of these states remains a priority to ensure peace and stability in the region.
On September 4-5, Tashkent will host an international conference dedicated to strengthening cooperation in the fight against terrorism and extremism, organized by the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Anti-Terrorism Center of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
In his address to the forum participants, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev stressed that this important international event will reaffirm the commitment to solidarity and cooperation in ensuring peace, security, and stability in the region.
"The conference agenda includes studying the most successful national practices, establishing effective mechanisms for cooperation in combating terrorism, exchange in the fields of science and education, developing practical tools to prevent the spread of extremism and radicalism, and addressing issues related to the prevention of money laundering and financing of terrorism.
I am confident that the 'East-Anti-Terror-2024' joint anti-terrorism exercises, held for the first time in our country tomorrow, will also contribute to expanding practical cooperation in countering common security threats and enhancing the capabilities of special forces units," the address stated.
The address highlighted that geopolitical tensions and conflicts, coupled with a lack of mutual trust, negatively impact the development of international cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism.
"At the same time, threats and dangers in cyberspace are increasing. Illegal activities, recruitment, and the promotion of radical ideas are increasingly carried out through internet networks and channels that do not recognize national borders or legal norms. As a result, today, representatives of the relatively vulnerable segments of the population, including our youth and labor migrants, are becoming victims of 'online brainwashing,' being recruited into various illegal groups, and committing crimes."
Therefore, improving the legislative framework and conducting joint activities to counter these threats within international organizations remain essential tasks.
"It should be noted that our country's National Strategy to Combat Terrorism and Extremism is based on a comprehensive, inclusive, and systematic approach, which includes preventive and preemptive measures as well as timely practical responses. Strengthening the atmosphere of unity in society, developing open dialogue, supporting education and upbringing in every way, creating jobs, and ensuring reliable social protection of the population are priority directions in this regard.
At the same time, we consider the protection and promotion of human rights and freedoms, along with the unwavering adherence to the rule of law, to be the fundamental basis for combating terrorism and extremism," said the President of Uzbekistan.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev also mentioned that Uzbekistan is consistently implementing its National Strategy to Combat Terrorism and Extremism and that individuals brought back from "hot spots" are being reintegrated into peaceful life. It was noted that the activities of the special services of the countries will be coordinated within the framework of the SCO and CIS.
"In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that close cooperation and effective coordination of the activities of our countries' special services will continue to be a priority direction of interstate cooperation to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region," said President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
