Five local officials arrested for corruption in Sirdarya

Five district governors in the Sirdarya region have been implicated in corruption-related crimes, according to the Anti-Corruption Agency. The announcement, made during a meeting addressing ongoing anti-corruption efforts, shed light on the widespread prevalence of such activities among regional officials.

The agency's report highlighted that in 2023, a total of 324 corruption-related crimes were registered in the Sirdarya region, with an additional 216 cases reported in the first eight months of 2024. Among those accused are several key officials, including district governors, deputy governors, and other employees of local administrative bodies.

According to the agency, three district governors, one deputy governor, and 17 local administration employees were involved in corruption cases in 2023. This year, the figures included two district governors, three deputy governors, two administrative staff members, three officials from the regional beautification department, and one representative from a public procurement engineering company.

The Anti-Corruption Agency Director, Akmal Burkhanov, attended the meeting alongside other regional leaders to review efforts to prevent corruption in Sirdarya. The discussion emphasized the need for stricter oversight and reforms within local governments to curb the rise in criminal activities by public officials.

The meeting also addressed concerns about some local officials' involvement in private business ventures, a practice that raises questions about potential conflicts of interest and further undermines public trust in the region’s governance.
