Customs officials prevent smuggling of 116 historical coins to Russia

Customs officials at Karshi Airport have intercepted an attempt to smuggle 116 ancient coins, some dating back to the Bukhara Emirate era, to Russia. The confiscated items have been handed over to the Kashkadarya Regional Museum of History and Culture, according to the regional customs department.

The incident occurred when passenger X.X., scheduled to fly on flight HY-9623 to Moscow, was found carrying undeclared historical and cultural artifacts during a routine luggage scan. A subsequent personal inspection, conducted in the presence of witnesses, revealed 116 coins, each at least 50 years old and of significant historical value.

The seized coins, some of which have been confirmed by the Cultural Heritage Agency to originate from the Bukhara Emirate period, are now safeguarded at the Kashkadarya Regional Museum.

An administrative case has been opened, and materials related to the incident have been submitted to court for further proceedings.

Customs authorities highlighted that this marks the 10th attempt this year to illegally transport cultural heritage items through Karshi Airport. Since the beginning of the year, 168 culturally significant items valued at over 10 million UZS have been confiscated by airport customs officials.
