Tashkent police alert public to new fraud scheme on Telegram targeting employees through fake executive profiles

The Tashkent City Police Department has issued a warning about a new type of online fraud circulating on Telegram, where scammers impersonate high-ranking officials to deceive their subordinates. The scheme involves fraudsters creating fake Telegram profiles, posing as leaders of various ministries, agencies, and organizations to gain the trust of unsuspecting employees and extract personal information.

According to the police statement, scammers set up a fake account in the name of a company or organization head and initiate contact with an employee via Telegram message. During the conversation, the scammer, posing as the manager, claims that law enforcement authorities are interested in obtaining certain information from the “superior.” The fraudster then informs the employee that an individual claiming to be a law enforcement officer will reach out shortly.

Believing the ruse, the employee then provides sensitive details to a second individual, also part of the scam and pretending to be an investigator. As a result, victims are tricked into giving away personal or financial information, leading to the loss of funds from their bank cards.

“Be vigilant. Before trusting any message or request for information, verify the source by making a phone call or directly contacting the sender to confirm authenticity,” the police advised in their announcement.

The police encourage anyone who encounters such situations to contact the Tashkent City Police Department at 71-206-55-00 or 102. All reports will be treated confidentially.
